A Bit of Consumer Advice from Two Egg, Florida

I was browsing through Amazon.com today and noticed that some people and/or companies are reselling copies of my various books for some pretty astronomical prices. Here are some examples.
  • Two Egg, Florida - $21.36 (Retails for $16.95)
  • Battle of Marianna - $34.97 (Retails for $19.95)
  • Battle of Natural Bridge -$19.75 (Retails for $19.95)
  • History of Jackson County, Florida: The Early Years - $51.77 (Retails for $24.95)
  • Early History of Gadsden County, Florida - $51.77 (Retails for $24.95)

Amazon provides a service that lets other firms or individuals resell books through their website. And honestly, I have no problem with anyone making a profit, but I hate the thought of a reader paying $51.77 for a book that they can buy brand new for $24.95.

If you want any of my books for Christmas gifts, I suggest you buy them from the official site at www.exploresouthernhistory.com/dalecox. Amazon now services all orders there and you can get new copies at the best price available. Signed copies of The History of Jackson County, Florida: The Early Years are also available at Chipola River Book and Tea in Downtown Marianna.

Best,

Dale Cox

New Book: "A History of Jackson County, Florida" to be released soon

The first volume of my new three volume set of books, A History of Jackson County, Florida will be released in a couple of weeks. Volume One covers the years 1674-1865 and will be the first of the three books to be released. Volume Two, which covers the years 1866-1935 will be released this summer and Volume Three, 1936-Present will be out by Christmas.
I divided the book into three volumes because of its length (over 700 pages). This will keep each of the the parts affordable (retail price is set for $24.95) instead of them all being put together into one large book that would cost more than many readers could afford to pay in one lump sum.
Volume One will be available through www.barnesandnoble.com, www.amazon.com and most other online retailers by around the end of January. It will also be available in Marianna at Chipola River Book and Tea downtown (same block as the Gazebo Restaurant).
Here are some of the chapters from Volume One:
  • San Nicolas and San Carlos, The Spanish Missions of Jackson County
  • Ellicott's Observatory, 1799
  • The Perryman Family and the War of 1812
  • The First Seminole War
  • Andrew Jackson's March through Jackson County
  • First Settlements
  • The Establishment of Jackson County
  • Greenwood and Campbellton
  • Marianna vs. Webbville
  • The Ghost of Bellamy Bridge
  • Fort Marianna and the Second Seminole War
  • The Plantation Era
  • Slavery
  • The Riverboat Era
  • The Calhoun County War of 1860
  • The War Between the States
  • The Battle of Marianna

Passing the torch...

My oldest son William has decided to follow in his dad's footsteps, so to speak, and is starting a publishing firm. He will specialize in books on little known aspects of Florida and Southern history.

To help get him started, I'm in the process of handing over a number of manuscripts that I finished over the last ten years. He has begun working on editing them and will begin putting them into print over the next few years. He is also looking for additional works by nonfiction writers, with a special emphasis on lesser known yet significant historical events. For more information, you can email me at dalecox@twoeggfla.com with your inquiry and I'll be glad to pass it along.

I'm really proud to see him giving this a chance. As my last three books (The Battle of Marianna, Florida, Two Egg, Florida and The Battle of Natural Bridge, Florida) have demonstrated, there is definitely a market for well-researched books on Florida and Southern history. Those of you who know me are aware of my health situation. I'm no longer able to do the research and writing I would like to do, so it is great to see him take interest in my unpublished work.

The first of the new books, The Battle of Massard Prairie: The 1864 Confederate Attack on Fort Smith, Arkansas, should be out in December.

He'll have a website up soon, and I'll pass that along as soon as it is ready to go.
